Senior Adult Ministry

Hello... Welcome and God Bless you,
brinda_new_178.jpg
My name is Brinda Peterson, I am the minister to Senior Adults. As pastor to the seniors, I believe it is our responsiblity to minister to both the spiritual, as well as, the practical needs of the people.
With that in mind, we offer a variety of programs and events that are especially developed for the senior adult 55+.

A well rounded ministry takes a lot of work and a lot of workers; therefore, we'd like to encourage you to join our ministry team in the service of the Lord.  Click on My Philosophy to learn more about this type of ministry.

Senior Adult Bible Studies

Bible open with glasses
We currently have three opportunities to study God's word with other senior adult believers. Our three studies are on Sunday Night at 6:00 PM downstairs in the Fellowship Hall, Tuesday Mornings at 11:00 AM downstairs in the "Gray Zone" and Wednesday Mornings at 10:30 AM at McCall Village in the social hall. We invite you to join us as we dig into God's word and learn what it means for us today. We are currently doing a study entitled "Spiritual Disciplines." Be prepared to learn something new in this question/discussion style study.

Please note: Our Wednesday study is now meeting in social hall at McCall Village on Dinuba Avenue. Be sure to call the church for directions if you not sure where it is. This study is open to all senior adults regardless of residence. If you live at the park, plan on joining us.

Lets Make A Deal - Price Is Right Game. 2007 003.jpg
We believe that socialization is a key to healthy living, especially if one is no longer in the work force. We offer a variety of fellowshipping events that help us connect with others and make new friendships. They are:

Monday Matinee Movies... Once a month we turn back the hands of time to yester-year with our 10 cent movies and 5 cent popcorn. The type of movies vary from month to month (western, comedy, musical, ect.) but we gaurrentee that the newest of these movies will be from a day gone by. And that's not all, your 10 cent ticket automatically puts you into our drawing for a grocery store gift card, pharmacy gift card or postage stamps. In the past, we watched "Old Corral" with Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, "We're in the Army Now" with Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin, "The Long, Long Trailer" with Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez, and "White Christmas" with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye, just to mention a few. We have loads of fun. We invite you and your senior friends to come out and join us each month.

Friday Fun Fellowship... Each month we get together either on Friday afternoon or Friday evening for FUN. In the past we have played the "Price is Right" Game, enjoyed an Old Time Gospel Hymn Sing, had a Pot Luck accompanied by a fun hour of Bingo and we gathered to play the "Let's Make a Deal" which was a hoot. To add to our fun, when we play the games there is always an opportunity to win fun and usable prizes. In addition to in house activities, we have plans for Fun Friday Fellowship outings such as: bowling, picnics in the park and more.

Along with these type of events, we also fellowship together about once a quarter, as we go on either a Day trip or an overnight trip.

Day Trips Top of Page

Bus Trip.jpg
Day Trips are a great way to combine fellowship with outreach...  We have a grand time on the road. In the past, we have toured the Blossom Trail and ate lunch at the Blossom Trail Cafe, shopped in Gilroy at the outlets and went to the Getty Musuem. We have gone to Roger Rockas Dinner Theater to see "Man of La Mancha," and Second Space Playhouse to see "The Best Christmas Pagent Ever" and "A Christmas Carol." We have also gone see several of the Wrinkles performance at City College.

Overnight Trips Top of Page

Like Day Trips, Overnight trips allow us to get better acquainted with our brothers and sisters in Christ. In years past, the seniors have gone on week long vacations together.  In the last few years, we have been on a trip to Hoover Dam, on an Alaskan Cruise, and flew to Florida to watch the Space Shuttle Luanch. Besides trips for fun, we also enjoy trips for the purpose of renewing our spirits and worshipping God. A group of senior adults went to beautiful  Murieta Hots Springs for a three day Retreat/Conference and to Saddleback Church to hear Josh McDowell, H.B. london and Galvin McLoed speak. Be sure to keep watching for the exciting trips we will be planning each year.

Outreach Events Top of Page

Wednesday Bible Study 004.jpg
Outreach is about reaching out to others, especially those who do not know Jesus as their Lord and Savior. But sharing one's faith is not always as easy as it sounds. To assist individuals in this area we offer programs that allow us to share Jesus in practical ways first. One of the ways we achieve this is by offering Free Public Seminars about issues that apply to all seniors. We have offered a Senior Safety Seminar with guest speakers from the Fire Department, Police Department and Senior Center; a "Free Senior Entitlements" seminar with Dr. Kieth Lane a Certified Senior Advisor; a seminar on living wills and trusts.

In 2010, we held a "Fit for Greater Things" seminar on physical and spiritual health with guest speak dr. Shetty a baord certified cardiologisy. Keep an eye on our calendar for upcoming dates.

Besides outreach programs and events that apply primarily to senior adults, the senior adults actively lend their assistance to other ministries within the congregation to reach out to the community, such as helping with VBS, sponsoring youth, and other adult ministry events. Our seniors are strong financial supporters within the church at large, allowing the church's outreach efforts to expand beyond what is described here.

Service Opportunities Top of Page

Mel and Glorie.jpg
We are all called to be servants. Even Jesus said he "did not come to be served, but to serve." With our Seniors Helping Senior Program, it is our hope that all senior adults at SFBC will have their needs met whether if they are practical needs or spiritual needs. This is especially important for our elderly and our widows/widowers. As mentioned earlier, a wholeistic ministry takes work and a lot of workers. Scroll down to see the variety of sevice opportunities available and let us know where you can best be of service.

Senior Ministry Opportunities

Transportation ministry involves helping to provide transportation for senior adults; such as to church, a doctor’s appointment or grocery shopping.
Love Connection ministry involves visiting senior adults in their homes or rehabilitation centers, also making periodic phone calls and sending out encouragement cards.
Helps Ministry is about helping where needed. The main purpose of this ministry is to run errands for those who find themselves temporarily in need of assistance; such as picking up groceries, postage stamps, medications and such.
Meal Ministry involves preparing a meal for seniors who are ill or who have just returned from a hospital stay.
Events Ministry includes but not limited to: helping with advertising such as, passing out fliers and making phone calls; helping prepare for events such as, set up tables and chairs prior to an event, making copies and preparing packet information, supplying raffle prizes and other supplies needed; helping at the event such as, greeters, passing out information or supplies, kitchen helpers preparing snacks, drinks and occasional meals, or clean up after event.
Phone Ministry involves making phone calls for the minister of Senior Adults when a large number of people need to be contacted. Its easy to do and all you really need is the time and a phone... but you can always make the calls from the church too.
Senior Adult Ministry Team involves being the eyes and ears in order to make suggestions for upcoming events, speakers and trips, also helping to build enthusiasm within the senior population about the ministry.
Mission Opportunities are available. The church supports local, national and worldwide missions. We also adopt various short-term and long-term "hands on" mission opportunties which we encourage you to get involved in.

There are so many areas where you can be of great assistance to our ministry. Let us know which areas we can call on you for help.

light, heart“My Philosophy of Senior Adult Ministry”
By Brinda Peterson
Minister to Senior Adults

My purpose statement of Senior Adult Ministry is to let the LIGHT of Christ’s love SHINE through the lives of seniors, by Serving and respecting others, Honoring God, Introducing lost individuals to Christ, helping seniors make and maintain New connections with others, and to Experience growth through study, prayer, and God’s word.

I created my purpose statement LIGHT using the acronym SHINE by using the five purposes set by the church, which emphasize Service (Ministry), Worship, Sharing (Evangelism), Caring (Fellowship), and Teaching (Discipleship).

John 1:4 says, “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.” The original life and light of God was in the word. The word was God in the flesh of Jesus. That same light is in believers, and gives life to all who receive the word. The metaphor SHINE is wrapped up in the scriptures: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father, which is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16) “For you were once in darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth) finding out what is acceptable to the Lord.” (Ephesians 5:8-10)

Senior adult ministry is an opportunity to meet seniors where they are with a holistic approach to ministry. This is produced by addressing and meeting all aspects of a person’s and groups’ well-being, which includes: mentally, by challenging and encouraging them; physically, by providing information and opportunity to obtain care of self; economically, by seeing that the basic supplies for living are available; recreationally, through accessible and safe places to play; environmentally, by providing access-friendly spaces; socially, through fellowship activities; and spiritually, by providing opportunities for worship, study and service.

All ministries begin by exhibiting love and respect for all people. Jesus stated, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." (John 13:34-35)

When Christians SHINE, Christ’ LIGHT is visible to the darken world, but in order for us to fully SHINE, we must know Christ personally, understand the purposes of the Church, as well as, the mission of the Christian life. It is my job as a ‘called’ minister through the power of the Holy Spirit to help seniors SHINE.
